Burrowing Owls of Cape Coral

Burrowing Owls of Cape Coral

Burrowing Owl

Have you noticed the high grass on some lots combined with crossed pieces of wood and white stakes? These areas may or may not be accompanied by a sign. If you look closely you may see a small owl sitting there. These are the famous Florida Burrowing Owls. There are over 2,500 burrows in Cape Coral and they are protected by the state. The burrows are marked so that they won’t be destroyed accidentally.

Just because a burrow is located on an empty lot doesn’t mean you can’t build a home there though. It is preferable to build the home without disturbing the burrow but if that isn’t practical, the burrow can be destroyed (if not occupied) following the issuing of a permit to do so.

More information and sites to view the owls are mapped out for you by the City of Cape Coral.

For information on buying a vacant lot or a home for sale in Cape Coral, give Jill Winchel a call at 615-504-1185. I am a Realtor with The Koffman Group at Royal Shell Real Estate in Cape Coral.

Welcome to Cape Coral!

Welcome to Cape Coral!

Caloosahatchee River

Crossing the Cape Coral Bridge from Ft Myers to Cape Coral will probably leave you with your mouth agape. The beauty of the water glistening from the sun’s rays combined with the boats and picturesque homes along the water is quite a site to see. Welcome Center sign

As soon as you get to the end of the bridge you’ll want to take a right and stop at the Chamber of Commerce Welcome Center located at 2051 Cape Coral Parkway E.

Welcome Center

The Welcome Center is located in the same location as Bernice Braden Park--10 acres of grass on the banks of the Caloosahatchee River. You’ll have to bring a chair or blanket if you want to sit but if you’ve been traveling this is a great place to stretch your legs. Bernice Braden Park

The Welcome Center is staffed with knowledgeable residents and has a host of handouts. One that you should pick up for sure is simply entitled ‘Cape Coral’. It is the official publication of the Chamber of Commerce and contains a wealth of information about the city. Another one is the ‘Cape Coral Parks & Recreation Program Guide’. There is also information regarding the New Resident’s Club and the Social Club.

Handouts

Definitely make it a point to stop in at the Chamber of Commerce one day and take a few minutes to enjoy the view from the park.

What To Do with All of those Sanibel Shells!

What To Do with All of those Sanibel Shells!

One of the main reasons people flock to Sanibel Island is because there is an abundance of shells on the beach. It is fun to pick through the mounds of shells to find that perfect lettered olive, shark eye, or colorful scallop. You can end up going home each time with buckets of shells and then having to find a spot for them. There are many craft and display ideas on the internet but I saw a beauty just the other day in my neighborhood…a shell mailboxShell mailbox

Shell mailbox 2Not sure if this mailbox was purchased or made by the owner but what a great idea to show off your beautiful shells and you can enjoy them without cluttering up the house.

One of the best times to shell is soon after a storm due to the churning up of the water and shell beds. Have fun shelling the next time you’re at the beach but remember that it is illegal to take home any live shells from Sanibel and all of Lee County.

If you’re in the market for real estate and want information on buying a home or condo in Sanibel, give Ross Winchel (Century 21 Sunbelt Realty) a call at 239-898-1214 or click on a link to start your search:

Things To Do in Cape Coral-Bert's

Things To Do in Cape Coral-Bert's

I love the water and therefore I am lucky to live in Cape Coral. One of my favorite Things To Do in Cape Coral is dine with a view of the water. My husband, daughter, and I recently drove out to Matlacha (pronounced MAT la shay) to try out Bert’s Bar & Grill. Matlacha, an old fishing village, is in-between Cape Coral and Pine Island and is home to quaint shops and cottages. Bert's Bar and Grill

The unassuming blue building was built in the 1930’s and features 3 entrances. If you’re like me, you’ll navigate towards the open doorway on the right and head out back for a table with a view of Matlacha Pass. It is a ‘Seat Yourself’ establishment that has indoor and outdoor seating, a bar and pool tables, and a dock available for boaters to tie up. Live music is featured nightly.

Although we intended to order the All You Can Eat Fish Fry (Wed and Fri from 4:00-9:00) they were already sold out by the time we arrived. We ordered baskets of wings, fish tacos, and fried shrimp instead and were quite satisfied. Their menu contains an array of seafood, salads, sandwiches, chicken, and burgers. The food is made to order so ask the server for a cold drink while you enjoy the scenery.

Berts view

Bert’s has a great laid-back atmosphere and a picture perfect setting, although don’t expect to see the sunset as the restaurant is on the left side of Pine Island Road (as you’re headed west).

We’ll make sure we arrive earlier next time to enjoy the fish fry!

Things To Do in Cape Coral-Rumrunners

Rumrunners view 1

I love the water and therefore I am glad there is so much of it in and around Cape Coral. One of my favorite Things To Do in Cape Coral is dine with a view of the water. My husband and I recently celebrated our 28th wedding anniversary and choose to dine at Rumrunners because of the beautiful views. It is a restaurant at the southern end of Chiquita Boulevard in the Cape Harbour area.

This casual eatery has indoor and outdoor seating, a full bar, and a dock available for boaters to tie up. Their menu contains an array of seafood, salads, pastas, and steaks. We enjoyed steak for our anniversary but I have my eyes on the spicy crab spring rolls for my next visit!

After dinner we strolled over to the center of Cape Harbour which features additional dining choices, shops, and a marina. It was a very enjoyable evening and one I’ll happily repeat.

Who mows all of those Vacant Lots?

Mower in Cape Coral

Did you ever wonder Who mows all of those Vacant Lots? throughout Cape Coral? With much of Cape Coral FL still in the development phase vacant lots are found throughout the city. On a rotating basis city workers come through with big mowers and quickly mow the quarter acre lots. The mowing is automatically done and billed to the owner. There are 7 mows per year with no mowings occurring January through March. The maximum grass height in Lee County is 12 inches.

For information on buying a vacant lot or a home for sale in Cape Coral, call Ross Winchel  at 239-898-1214 or Jill Winchel at 615-504-1185.
