Pets in Cape Coral
Lee County requires all dogs, cats, and ferrets to be licensed and vaccinated for rabies, even if you don’t live here permanently. If your animal resides in Lee County at least 30 days per year then it needs to be licensed. Some veterinary offices will sell the license after your pet receives its rabies shot (or when proof is provided that your pet has a current vaccination). A separate rabies tag is not required, just the Lee County license. You may purchase a one or three year license. Discounts are given if your pet has been sterilized and/or has a microchip. A license can also be obtained by mail or in person at Lee County Domestic Animal Services, 5600 Banner Dr, Ft Myers. More information on licensing is available at the Lee County website.
Additional information for dog owners…dogs are not allowed in many areas of Cape Coral parks, including athletic parks, playgrounds, beaches, piers, boardwalks, nature trails, or picnic areas, but they are allowed on the paved walking paths. 
Rotary Park is home to the only dog park in the city, Wagging Tails Dog Park. It may be most convenient to walk your dog in your neighborhood and with additional sidewalks being installed in the city it is becoming safer to do so. For roads without sidewalks, remember to walk on the side facing traffic, move to the side when a car is approaching, and have a flashlight when walking at night.
Please be a good neighbor and pick up after your pet, whether at a park or just in your neighborhood. Handy waste bag holders that can be attached to the leash or harness are sold at a number of local stores and waste stations are located at the parks.
